Shellfish Farm Operations Supervisor-Relocate to Port Hardy, BC

Purpose: K’awat’si Fisheries Company is seeking a Shellfish Farm Operations Supervisor to assist with general shellfish farm operations, including but not limited to planting, maintenance, and harvesting of the company’s scallop and oyster beds. Perform general grounds maintenance and upkeep, and assist with various projects and administrative duties as needed.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

  • Personal flotation devices (PFDs) must be worn at all times.
  • Basic PPE will be provided to staff.
  • Hand protection (latex gloves and work gloves) will be provided; workers are responsible for cleaning work gloves regularly to minimize waste.
  • Sun protection (sunscreen) will be provided.

**This is a camp-based position. 8 days in and 8 days out**

Qualifications:
  • Requirements
    • Level 1 First Aid certification
    • related: 5 years (preferred)

    Assets

    • Valid driver’s license
    • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)
    • Marine Emergency Duties (MED A3)
    • Radio Operator Certificate (ROCM)

    Work Experience

    • Minimum of two (2) years of related work experience preferred.

    Physical and PPE Requirements

    Physical Requirements:

    • This position requires standing for prolonged periods.
    • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
    • Additional physical requirements include repetitive motions; substantial use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers; manual dexterity; grasping; applying pressure with fingers and palms; reaching and extending hands and arms in all directions; and frequent stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
    • Visual acuity is required to assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work, as well as to observe facilities or structures (e.g., equipment operation, safety risks, inspections).
    • Must be able to work on a floating platform and maintain awareness of foot placement and potential tripping hazards.
Responsibilities
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Maintain company assets and equipment in safe, reliable working condition.
    • Actively contribute to improving farm productivity, quality, safety, inventory control, and operating efficiency using sound aquaculture practices.
    • Work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based environment.
    • Take initiative, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced setting.
    • Read, understand, and follow safety rules, operating procedures, maintenance instructions, and standard operating manuals.
    • Understand, follow, and help enforce all applicable government regulations, farm practices, and industry standards.
    • Operate, maintain, and clean pumps, filters, tanks, and other aquaculture equipment.
    • Clean, repair, and maintain aquaculture nets, cages, and enclosures.
    • Safely operate the farm vessel and related marine equipment.
    • Practice safe handling and operation of ropes, floats, nets, and other farm gear.
    • Operate both motorized and non-motorized watercraft as required for daily aquaculture operations.
    • Assist with on-site supervision of farm activities and personnel, as assigned.
    • Perform other duties as needed to support farm operations.

    Data Collection

    • Assist with collecting and recording growth and production data.

    Husbandry

    • Assist with all husbandry tasks, including cleaning, sorting, grading, and tumbling of shellfish.

    Administrative Duties

    • Records: Assist the farm manager in maintaining farm data from seeding to harvest.
    • Coordination: Assist the farm manager in working with other managers to coordinate crews and equipment to maximize company efficiency.
    • Safety, Rules, and Policies: Assist the farm manager in educating crews on company rules, policies, and safety procedures.
    • Budgeting: Assist the farm manager in developing the farm budget.
    • Computer Skills: Basic computer skills are required for recording farm data and generating month-end reports.
    • Assist the farm manager in educating crews on the company’s ECOP (Environmental Codes of Practice).
    • Work with the farm manager to develop new farming practices and techniques.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the farm manager.
