Aquaculture Manager

Aquaculture Manager

K’awat’si Fisheries Company is looking for an Aquaculture Manager to join our team in Port Hardy, on Northern Vancouver Island.

The Aquaculture manager is responsible for supporting the Shellfish Farm Manager and Cold Storage Manager in operations and sales; administration, licensing, and political advocacy; and strategic planning and development of Fisheries.

Please note this is not a remote position and requires relocation to Port Hardy, B.C.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

Oversee Shellfish aquaculture farm manager and operations

  • Support farm manager in setting production targets
  • Collect regular farm updates from manager
  • Review farm finances with manager
  • Support manager in maintaining license conditions
  • Coordinate seed purchases and approve large expenses
  • Support and direct product distribution
  • Occasional physical work required

Shellfish sales and strategic marketing

  • Work with shellfish farm manager on shellfish market differentiation
  • Work with KEDC marketing for brand product promotion and feature events
  • Travel as necessary

Shellfish administration, licensing, political advocacy

  • Maintain and engage association memberships
  • advocate and support regional and provincial first nations access to new aquaculture
  • Complete shellfish funding applications
  • Oversee license conditions and reporting
  • Advocate for Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw access to resources

Fisheries cold storage and processing

  • Support cold storage manager
  • Support KEDC team and coordinate development of new cold storage processing business
  • oversee ongoing preventive control plan operations in existing facility
  • Administer and consult externally for PCP maintenance

Fisheries Brokerage

  • coordinate Mowi salmon purchases and sales
  • Scope wild and farmed fish product development for domestic and international markets
  • Create and expand relationships with local north island businesses

Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Lands Resources

  • Advising role to the LRO at request of LRO manager, especially on fisheries, forestry, and lands roundtables
  • GIS data and information capacity support
  • Provide capacity building support to Band office staff (education and social development) with approval from LRO and KEDC CEO

KEDC Fisheries General

  • Fisheries company reporting to CEO
  • Strategic planning and development of Fisheries LP adhering to KEDC’s company mandate
  • Support new business partnerships and foster existing relationships
  • GNN community advocacy
  • Support and advise skills training and advancement of GNN members

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of previous related experience
  • Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) an asset
  • Bachelor of Science in a related field required
  • Experience applying for grant writing and grant administration
  • Cultural safety training, knowledge of historical colonial impacts on the GNN people considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Rights and Title of the GNN territory
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers license

Salary

$80,000 – $85,000 per year
