Assistant Controller

K’awat’si Economic Development is looking for an Assistant Controller to join our team in Port Hardy, British Columbia, located on the northern end of Vancouver Island.

The Assistant Controller will oversee daily account activities, internal auditing, budgeting, and reviewing reports. The Assistant Controller will assist the head controller in managing both the short and long-term fiduciary activities of an organization.

** Please note that this position cannot be done remotely and requires relocation to Port Hardy, B.C.**

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Controller by overseeing accounting, billing, collections, payroll and financial reporting functions
  • Review accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Supporting most aspects of accounting management.
  • Assisting in the formulation of internal controls and policies to comply with legislation and established best practices.
  • Provide back up for Controller as required.
  • Calculates and prepares cheques for payroll, utilities, taxes and other bills.
  • Maintains and balances various accounts using computerized bookkeeping systems.
  • Completes and submits tax remittance forms, workers’ compensation forms, pension contribution forms and other related government documents.
  • Prepares information related to tax exemptions and income tax for non-aboriginal employees.
  • Assist the Controller oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives
  • Assist in the month end closing process, including the preparation of month end journal entries
  • Reconcile monthly inter-company transactions to ensure proper accounting treatment
  • Other Duties as assigned

Role Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and 5+ years Technical and Management experience preferred.
  • CPA designation Required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting functions and requirements.
  • Good communication skills, problem solving and team work skills.
  • Ability to adapt, undertake multiple tasks and respond to changing priorities is imperative.
  • Possess computer skills, proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) is an asset.
  • Diplomacy, tact and confidentiality in dealing with a variety of people and information.
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial closure, reporting etc
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (especially excel) and accounting software

Salary: $80,000.00-$95,000.00 per year
